History, one of the most capacious of all academic callings, embraces many approaches to the study of the human past. Allied with the humanities, historians read texts and examine art and architecture. Inspired by the social sciences, historians study family structures and analyze economic statistics. In collaboration with engineers and scientists, historians explore topics ranging from military technologies to people’s impacts on their environments. Individuals who maintain information about the past are a feature of every human society. History, which emerged as a scholastic endeavor throughout the ancient world almost 3,000 years ago, is among the oldest and most established of academic disciplines.
