Movies are Mental: How Motion Pictures Illuminate Human Mental Processes and Behavior
This lecture explores how film serves as a powerful lens for understanding psychological phenomena. In UC Merced’s Psychology and Film course, movies are examined as a modern form of storytelling that reveals human thoughts, emotions, and behavior. As both art and entertainment, films reflect the human condition, offering insight into motives, relationships, and societal experiences. Because they are created by people for people, their content is inherently psychological. Through portrayals of emotions such as love, fear, anger, and joy, films illuminate why people act the way they do and invite audiences to engage with the inner workings of the human mind.
