Best Colleges for Sustainability in California

Best Colleges for Sustainability in California

California colleges where sustainability shows up in what you study, where you live and learn, and what you can actually work on as an undergraduate.

Last updated: August 2026

The short answer

The best colleges for sustainability do more than offer environmental courses. They give students ways to connect what they study with research, campus operations and real environmental challenges. In California, that can mean working on renewable energy, water systems, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, green buildings or conservation. The strongest choice depends on whether you want sustainability primarily as a major, a research focus, a hands-on experience or part of everyday campus life. This guide compares ten California universities on all of those dimensions, using each institution's own current documentation and the same independent rating system for campus performance.

Quick answers

What makes a college strong in sustainability?

Six things, and a strong college does more than one of them: you can study sustainability from several academic directions, faculty are researching environmental problems and taking undergraduates into that work, there are hands-on projects outside class, the campus applies sustainability to its own buildings, energy, water and waste, the institution has current climate goals with measurable progress, and undergraduates can participate through organizations, internships, fellowships or campus jobs. Independent verification through a system such as AASHE STARS makes those claims checkable.

Which California colleges are known for sustainability?

Ten California universities with documented sustainability evidence appear on this page: UC Merced, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Stanford and Cal Poly Humboldt. They are strong in different ways — UC Davis in agriculture and food systems, Cal Poly SLO in applied municipal climate projects, Stanford in interdisciplinary climate research, Cal Poly Humboldt in offshore wind, UC Merced in connecting the campus itself to coursework and research.

Can you study sustainability without majoring in environmental science?

Yes. Sustainability questions run through engineering, economics, public health, political science, data science, agriculture, biology, chemistry and the humanities. Many students combine a home major with an environmental minor, a research placement or a campus sustainability role. At most of the universities on this page there is no single degree called 'Sustainability' — the subject is reached through several majors, minors and interdisciplinary programs.

Is UC Merced good for sustainability?

UC Merced is one of the California universities where sustainability is visible in academics, campus operations and research at the same time. It states that every major campus building is LEED certified, and in December 2020 it announced it was the first public research university in the nation, and the first UC campus, to achieve carbon neutrality for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. It runs a Living Laboratory Pilot Program that turns campus systems and data into student projects, and in November 2025 it reported a perfect Green Rating and a No. 7 national placement on The Princeton Review's 2025 Top 50 Green Colleges list.

Can the campus itself become part of your education?

A living lab uses real campus systems, spaces and operations — the energy plant, the water meters, the waste stream, the landscape, the transportation fleet — as places where students and faculty can test, study or implement ideas. You study the building you are standing in. Several California universities run a version of this, and they are not identical.

UC Merced — Living Laboratory Pilot Program

Pairs faculty and students with campus operations to research, design or implement work tied to the university's climate goals. Focus areas include energy and utilities, water, waste and circular economy, transportation, climate action and decarbonization, landscape and biodiversity, and community engagement. Documented inaugural projects include a climate literacy study and a student capstone building a campus sustainability dashboard.

Living Lab projects

UC Irvine — Campus as a Living Lab

A hybrid seminar and internship run jointly by Biological Sciences, the Sustainability Resource Center and Housing Sustainability, so undergraduates earn credit while working on campus sustainability problems.

What a living lab gives you as a student

  • You see how a sustainability decision moves from an idea or a dataset into a real place
  • You work with operations staff and engineers, not only with faculty
  • You get results you can describe in an interview or a graduate application
  • You learn the unglamorous parts — budgets, maintenance, measurement — that classroom projects skip
  • Access is usually through a course, a capstone, an internship or a research placement, so ask how students join

How can you study sustainability?

There is rarely one door. Ask each college which majors, minors and interdisciplinary programs actually exist, and whether you can attach sustainability to the subject you already care about.

Environmental and earth systems

Degrees that treat water, climate, soil, ecosystems and human systems as one connected subject. At UC Merced this is the Environmental Systems Science B.S.; UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis and UC San Diego offer their own environmental studies and earth science routes.

UC Merced Environmental Systems Science B.S.

Engineering

Environmental, civil, mechanical, materials and energy engineering all lead into water treatment, renewable energy, efficient buildings and clean transportation. UC Merced offers an Environmental Engineering B.S.

UC Merced majors and minors

A minor alongside another major

A minor lets you keep economics, biology, computer science or political science as your home base. UC Merced lists a minor in Environmental Science and Sustainability; most universities on this page offer an equivalent.

UC Merced sustainability academics

Humanities, policy and economics

Environmental problems are also questions of law, cost, history and public persuasion. UC Merced offers an Environmental Humanities B.A.; Stanford's Doerr School of Sustainability and UC Berkeley's policy and energy programs are large examples of the same idea at a different scale.

Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability

Questions worth asking an admissions counselor

  • Which majors and minors here are explicitly environmental or sustainability-focused?
  • Can I add a sustainability minor to the major I want?
  • Which introductory courses are open to first-year students from any major?
  • Is there an interdisciplinary route that combines science with policy or economics?
  • How do students find a research group in this area, and in which year do they usually start?

What kind of sustainability research could you encounter?

Sustainability research in California is broad. These are the areas you are most likely to meet as an undergraduate, with examples of where they are strong.

Water and energy together

Research that started in a UC Merced lab helped lead to Project Nexus, California's first solar-over-canal installation, commemorated in April 2026 — an example of a campus research question becoming state infrastructure.

UC Merced — Project Nexus

Agriculture and food systems

UC Merced's 40-acre Experimental Smart Farm works on precision agriculture and water and fertilizer efficiency; UC Davis anchors one of the largest agricultural and food-systems research operations in the country.

UC Merced Experimental Smart Farm

Ecosystems, biodiversity and field science

UC Merced administers reserves and field stations within the University of California Natural Reserve System, including the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve and the Yosemite Field Station, which give undergraduates access to protected study sites.

UC Merced Natural Reserve System

Energy transition and the built environment

Campus decarbonization, clean energy infrastructure and offshore wind are all active research areas — UC Berkeley's Clean Energy Campus initiative and Cal Poly Humboldt's Schatz Energy Research Center are two very different examples.

What can students actually do?

Ranking lists rarely answer this. These are the concrete routes into sustainability work as an undergraduate, and what each one gives you.

Undergraduate research placements

Joining a faculty lab is the single biggest step. UC Merced's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center supports students into research placements and a summer research institute, including in environmental and engineering fields.

UC Merced UROC

Living-lab and capstone projects

Course-based and capstone routes let you work on the campus itself — a sustainability dashboard, an energy or water question, a waste study — and finish with a deliverable someone will use.

UC Merced Living Lab

Field stations and reserves

Field experience separates a transcript from an application. Reserve and field-station access through the UC Natural Reserve System means data collection at real field sites.

UC Merced Vernal Pools & Grassland Reserve

Paid fellowships and campus roles

Several campuses pay students to do sustainability work: Cal Poly SLO funds hundreds of students through California College Corps, and San Diego State employs student assistants on its STARS reporting. Ask each campus what is paid and how you apply.

Cal Poly College Corps

How students usually get in

  • Take the introductory environmental or energy course open to your year
  • Email two or three faculty whose work you have actually read
  • Apply to the campus undergraduate research program early — most start in the first or second year
  • Join a sustainability organization and take on a project with a deliverable
  • Ask the sustainability office directly which campus jobs and internships are open to undergraduates

What should you look for in a college if sustainability matters to you?

Seven questions that separate a campus where sustainability is a subject from one where it is also something you can take part in. Each includes what UC Merced currently documents, with the source.

Can I study sustainability from more than one academic angle?

You want the freedom to connect sustainability with science, engineering, policy, economics, data, agriculture or whatever else you care about — not a single narrow degree that forces you to choose between them.

At UC Merced

There is no degree called Sustainability. Instead the subject is reached through several routes, including an Environmental Systems Science B.S., an Environmental Engineering B.S., an Environmental Humanities B.A. and a minor in Environmental Science and Sustainability that can sit alongside another major.

Can undergraduates participate in sustainability research?

Research experience is what turns an interest into a credential. It is also the clearest test of whether a university treats undergraduates as participants or as an audience. Ask when students typically start and how they are matched with a lab.

At UC Merced

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center supports students into faculty research placements and a summer research institute. UC Merced was designated a Carnegie R1 very high research activity university in February 2025, which describes the research environment students are joining — it is not by itself a sustainability credential.

Can I work on real sustainability problems?

Applying what you learn to an actual system — a building, a water meter, a farm plot, a waste stream — is a different skill from analysing it on paper, and employers can tell the difference.

At UC Merced

The Living Laboratory Pilot Program pairs students and faculty with campus operations across energy and utilities, water, waste and circular economy, transportation, decarbonization, landscape and biodiversity. Documented inaugural projects include a climate literacy study and a student capstone building a campus sustainability dashboard. Off campus, the 40-acre Experimental Smart Farm works on precision agriculture and water and fertilizer efficiency.

Does the campus practice what it teaches?

A campus that applies sustainability to its own buildings, energy, water, waste and land is a daily working example — and it usually means there are operations staff who will talk to students about how it is done.

At UC Merced

UC Merced states that every major campus building is LEED certified, the U.S. Green Building Council's rating system for building performance. Its published building counts by certification level differ between pages, so no single total is reported here.

Is climate action part of the university's work?

Current, dated climate goals with reported progress tell you the institution is measuring itself. Vague ambitions with no date usually mean nobody is.

At UC Merced

In December 2020 UC Merced announced it had become the first public research university in the nation, and the first UC campus, to achieve carbon neutrality — an achievement UC Merced defines as zero net greenhouse-gas emissions for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources, not for all emissions. Its Triple Zero Initiative — zero net energy, zero waste and zero net greenhouse-gas emissions — is an active, ongoing commitment. All UC campuses also work under the University of California's 2023 climate action goals.

Can I learn outside the classroom?

Field sites, reserves, farms and working landscapes give you data collection, fieldwork and long-term study experience that a lecture hall cannot. Ask whether undergraduates get access or whether the sites are reserved for graduate researchers.

At UC Merced

UC Merced administers sites within the University of California Natural Reserve System, including the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve and the Yosemite Field Station, with Sequoia and SCICON field stations also listed among its reserve-system sites. The Experimental Smart Farm adds a working agricultural research site.

Does the university connect sustainability to the region around it?

Environmental problems are local before they are global. A university positioned inside a real environmental system gives you the chance to study water, agriculture, energy and ecosystems where the consequences are visible.

At UC Merced

UC Merced sits between the San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra Nevada, and its research reflects that: work originating in a UC Merced lab helped lead to Project Nexus, California's first solar-over-canal project, commemorated in April 2026, and its reserve sites reach from valley grassland and vernal pools to Yosemite.

STARS is the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Participating institutions report their own data against a common framework and are rated Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. Every rating, version and date in this table is read from the institution's report history on AASHE's public site (read August 2026). Ratings are valid for three years, so campuses re-report on that cycle and the table reflects each institution's most recent published submission. Not every college participates, and absence from STARS is not evidence of weak sustainability performance.

Where does UC Merced fit among California colleges for sustainability?

Start with the campus itself. UC Merced states that every major building on campus is LEED certified, the U.S. Green Building Council's standard for building performance, and in December 2020 it announced it had become the first public research university in the nation, and the first UC campus, to achieve carbon neutrality — an achievement UC Merced defines as zero net greenhouse-gas emissions for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources. Its broader Triple Zero Initiative, which adds zero net energy and zero waste, is an active, ongoing commitment. For a student, the practical meaning is simple: the systems you would read about elsewhere are running around you here, and the people who run them are on the same campus.

That is what makes the Living Laboratory Pilot Program more than a slogan. It pairs students and faculty with campus operations across energy and utilities, water, waste and the circular economy, transportation, decarbonization, landscape and biodiversity. Its documented inaugural projects include a climate literacy study and a student capstone team building a campus sustainability dashboard. You can see how a sustainability decision moves from an idea or a dataset into a real place — and you can put your name on the result. Not every student joins, so ask which courses, capstones and research placements are the way in.

Then there is the research environment. UC Merced was designated a Carnegie R1 very high research activity university in February 2025, and its undergraduate research center supports students into faculty labs and a summer research institute. The clearest recent illustration of where that work can lead is Project Nexus: research that began in a UC Merced lab helped lead to California's first solar-over-canal installation, commemorated in April 2026. Very few universities can show an undergraduate a line that runs from a campus lab to state infrastructure.

Place matters too. Merced sits between the San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra Nevada, so water, agriculture, energy, wildfire and ecosystems are not abstractions — they are the conditions outside the classroom. The 40-acre Experimental Smart Farm works on precision agriculture and water and fertilizer efficiency, and UC Merced administers reserve and field-station sites reaching from valley grassland and vernal pools to Yosemite. Externally, UC Merced reported in November 2025 that it had earned a perfect Green Rating and ranked No. 7 nationally on The Princeton Review's 2025 Top 50 Green Colleges list. Independent recognition is useful confirmation; the reason to look closely at UC Merced is what a student can actually take part in.

Who should consider UC Merced?

UC Merced may be especially worth considering if you want sustainability visible in everyday campus life — every major building is LEED certified and the campus reports carbon neutrality for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. If you want hands-on projects, the Living Laboratory Pilot Program opens campus energy, water, waste, transportation and landscape systems to student work. If you want undergraduate research, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center is the route into faculty labs at a Carnegie R1 university.

It also fits students whose interests point at water, climate and agriculture together: the Experimental Smart Farm, the reserve and field-station sites between the valley floor and Yosemite, and research such as the work behind California's first solar-over-canal project all sit in that space. If you want an environmental engineering or environmental systems degree, or want to pair a sustainability minor with a different major, those pathways exist. And if you want a public research university where field environments in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada are a short drive away, that is a real advantage here.

It is a less obvious fit if you want a large coastal marine-science campus, a doctoral-scale agricultural college, or a small liberal-arts environment — UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, UC Davis and Cal Poly Humboldt each answer those briefs more directly. The honest way to choose is to compare what students at each campus can actually join.

How to compare colleges for sustainability

Take this to a campus tour or an admissions call and ask for specifics, not adjectives.

  • Can I study sustainability through the academic areas I already care about?

  • Can undergraduates join sustainability research, and in which year do students usually start?

  • Are there hands-on projects outside class, and how do students get onto them?

  • Does the campus itself demonstrate sustainable practices in buildings, energy, water and waste?

  • Is there a living-lab or similar program that connects operations to coursework?

  • What current climate goals has the institution actually achieved, and which are still targets?

  • Can students work on sustainability through internships, fellowships or paid campus jobs?

  • Are field experiences, reserves or working sites available to undergraduates?

  • Does the school connect sustainability to real environmental issues in its own region?

  • Are the sustainability claims independently documented — for example through AASHE STARS or USGBC certification?

Frequently asked questions

What are the best colleges for sustainability in California?
Ten California universities with strong current, documented evidence are compared on this page: UC Merced, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Stanford and Cal Poly Humboldt. They lead in different ways — UC Davis in agriculture and food systems, UC Berkeley and Stanford in the breadth of climate and energy research, Cal Poly SLO in applied client projects, Cal Poly Humboldt in offshore wind, UC Merced in connecting campus operations, region and research into student work. The right answer depends on whether you want sustainability as a major, a research focus, a hands-on experience or part of daily campus life.
What makes a college sustainable?
Not solar panels alone. A sustainable college applies environmental principles to its own buildings, energy, water, waste, transportation and land; sets current climate goals and reports progress against them; teaches sustainability across more than one discipline; supports research on environmental problems; and gives undergraduates real ways to participate through projects, internships, fellowships and campus jobs. Independent verification — an AASHE STARS rating, LEED certification of buildings — is what makes those claims checkable.
What should I look for in a college if I care about sustainability?
Ask seven questions: can I study it from more than one academic angle; can undergraduates join research; can I work on real systems; does the campus practise what it teaches; is there current climate action with dates and reported progress; can I learn outside the classroom in field or applied settings; and does the university connect sustainability to the region around it. A campus that answers all seven concretely is more useful than one with a high ranking and vague specifics.
Which California colleges have green campuses?
Using AASHE STARS as the standardized measure, as read in August 2026: UC Berkeley (Platinum, filed 2025), UC San Diego (Platinum, 2024) and Stanford (Platinum, 2025) hold current Platinum ratings, while UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UCLA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Diego State, Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt hold current Gold ratings. UC Merced earned a Platinum rating under STARS v2.2 in February 2022 — at the time, the highest rating in the system. STARS ratings are valid for three years and campuses re-report on that cycle. Building performance is measured separately through LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
What is a campus living lab?
A living lab uses real campus systems, spaces and operations — energy, water, waste, transportation, landscape — as places where students and faculty can test, study or implement ideas. You work with actual meters, budgets and staff, and the result can be adopted. UC Merced runs a Living Laboratory Pilot Program, UC Irvine runs a credit-bearing Campus as a Living Lab seminar and internship, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo runs the same idea outward by placing student teams onto municipal climate projects.
Can I study sustainability without majoring in environmental science?
Yes, and most students do. Sustainability runs through engineering, economics, public health, data science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, political science and the humanities. A common route is a home major plus an environmental minor and a research placement. At UC Merced, for example, there is no degree called Sustainability — students reach it through Environmental Systems Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Humanities or a minor in Environmental Science and Sustainability.
Are sustainability rankings useful when choosing a college?
They are a starting point, not an answer. Ratings such as AASHE STARS and lists such as The Princeton Review's Green Colleges tell you an institution is doing measurable work and is willing to be assessed. They do not tell you whether you personally will get into a lab, a project or a paid campus role. Use a rating to build a shortlist, then ask each campus which specific programs undergraduates can join and how.
Is UC Merced good for sustainability?
It is one of the California universities where sustainability appears in academics, campus operations and research at once. UC Merced states every major campus building is LEED certified, announced carbon neutrality for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in December 2020, runs a Living Laboratory Pilot Program that turns campus systems into student projects, and reported in November 2025 a perfect Green Rating and a No. 7 national placement on The Princeton Review's 2025 Top 50 Green Colleges list. It is a Carnegie R1 university as of February 2025, and its water, energy and agriculture research is tied directly to the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada.
Is UC Merced carbon neutral?
UC Merced announced in December 2020 that it had become the first public research university in the nation, and the first campus in the University of California system, to achieve carbon neutrality. UC Merced defines that achievement as zero net greenhouse-gas emissions for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources — direct campus emissions and purchased energy. It does not mean every emission associated with the university, including Scope 3 categories such as commuting and supply chain, has been eliminated. UC Merced's Triple Zero Initiative, which also targets zero net energy and zero waste, is an active, ongoing commitment.
Are all UC Merced buildings LEED certified?
UC Merced states that every major campus building is LEED certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's rating system. Different UC Merced pages currently publish different counts of buildings at each certification level, so no specific Platinum, Gold or Silver total is quoted here. If an exact count matters to you, ask the Office of Sustainability for the current figure.
What is UC Merced's Living Lab?
The Living Laboratory Pilot Program pairs faculty and students with campus operations to research, design or implement work tied to the university's climate goals. Its focus areas include energy and utilities, water management, waste reduction and the circular economy, sustainable transportation, climate action and decarbonization, landscape and biodiversity, and equity and community engagement. Documented inaugural projects include a climate literacy study and a student capstone team building a campus sustainability dashboard. Participation is through specific courses, capstones and research placements — you apply or enrol to take part.
Can undergraduates do sustainability research at UC Merced?
Yes. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center supports students into faculty research placements and a summer research institute, and UC Merced has been a Carnegie R1 very high research activity university since February 2025. Environmental research at UC Merced spans water and energy systems, agriculture through the 40-acre Experimental Smart Farm, and ecosystems through reserve and field-station sites administered within the University of California Natural Reserve System.
What sustainability-related fields can I study at UC Merced?
UC Merced does not offer a degree called Sustainability. Verified current pathways include an Environmental Systems Science B.S., an Environmental Engineering B.S., an Environmental Humanities B.A. and a minor in Environmental Science and Sustainability that can be combined with another major. Check the current catalog with an admissions counselor, since program names and requirements change.
How does UC Merced compare with UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz for sustainability?
All three are strong and different. UC Davis brings the largest agricultural, food-systems and environmental research operation of the three and published a Fossil Fuel-Free Pathway Plan in December 2023. UC Santa Cruz brings a forest and coastal setting, a deep ecology and conservation identity, and a February 2025 target to cut fossil-fuel emissions 90% by 2045. UC Merced brings a campus where every major building is LEED certified and Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality was announced in 2020, plus a Living Lab that makes those systems available to students and a valley-to-Sierra research setting. Choose on which student experience you want, not on which name is most familiar.

Methodology

This guide compares California colleges using current publicly available evidence about sustainability academics, research, student opportunities, campus operations and climate action. Sources include institutions' official sustainability and academic sites, AASHE STARS, the U.S. Green Building Council and other authoritative organizations. The colleges are presented as strong choices for different student priorities, with no numerical ranking.

Ranking criteria

  • One standardized rating source. Every STARS rating, version, submission date and valid-through date is read from the institution's own report history on AASHE's public reporting site, including where a rating has lapsed.

  • Institutional sources for everything else. Academic pathways, campus operations, climate goals and student opportunities come from each university's own sustainability, academic or news pages, with dates attached.

  • Six dimensions, described not scored. Academics, research, experiential learning, campus operations, climate action and student participation are described for each institution; none is converted into a score.

  • Disputed figures omitted. Where an institution's own pages publish conflicting numbers — such as counts of buildings at each LEED level — the disputed figure is left out.

  • No ranking. No score, star rating, weighting or ordered ranking is produced, and no college is described as the best, greenest or most sustainable.
